About Emmy Koonce, LSW

Emmy began her career working with children, adolescents, and families as a teacher at several local schools, including working with international families from over eighty different countries. This gave her a love for working with diverse clients from all backgrounds and celebrating the uniqueness and worth of each child and family.

After transitioning into the mental health profession, Emmy continued working as a school social worker in both general and specialized behavioral health school settings. This role allowed her to support children and families on addressing topics such as anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, autism spectrum disorders (ASD), conduct disorders, growth mindset, executive functioning, social skills, and emotional regulation.

As part of a multidisciplinary team of teachers, administrators, families, and other clinicians, she worked to develop IEP and 504 goals to help students achieve success in all areas of their life. This has given her an opportunity to learn more about the special education process and how to assist children and families with navigating it. She also worked closely with families to provide support, education, and resources as they seek to foster positive relationships and interactions with their child.

Along with other evidence-based practices, Emmy’s therapeutic approach focuses on play based learning, mindfulness, and cognitive reframing.

Education

Emmy is a Licensed Social Worker in the state of Illinois. She obtained an undergraduate degree in Elementary Education from McKendree University and a Master of Social Work degree from University of Missouri-Saint Louis with a specialization in school social work. Emmy has attended professional development on sensory communication, behavior management, de-escalation strategies, working with students with ASD, and supporting LGBTQ+ youth.
